Amber Pennell crashed her pickup last Wednesday in Caldwell County, N.C. The News-Topic says her "truck left the roadway, went some 150 feet through a thick patch of kudzu and crashed about 100 feet down a steep ravine, coming to a rest in a stand of tall, kudzu-covered trees."

There she lay, for five days, while rescuers searched the area for any signs of the missing mother and wife.

Yesterday, they were about to suspend the search because of an approaching storm when Tommy Courtner, head of the county's emergency services department, found a clue.

Hundreds of residents from a flooded village near the Grand Canyon have been evacuated to safety after a nearby dam collapsed.

The dam broke following a day of heavy rains. The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular U.S. tourist attractions, drawing an estimated 5 million visitors a year.

The American actor and comic, who had a history of ill health, has died in a Chicago hospital of complications arising from pneumonia.

The 50-year-old had been admitted to hospital last week.

The U.S. unemployment rate jumped to 5.7 percent and payrolls were cut for the seventh consecutive month, which added to economic uncertainties.

Factory activity was nearly unchanged in July - data. GM lost $15-1/2 billion in the second quarter - its third biggest loss ever.

A state trooper was injured Wednesday morning while arresting a man who led police on a wild chase through several Atlanta.

The chase ended shortly after 11 a.m. at Amsterdam Avenue and Monroe Drive in Midtown when a trooper used a "pit maneuver" to stop the fleeing truck. The maneuver is used by police to end chases by bumping a rear fender panel, turning a fleeing vehicle sideways.

Hit US show Judge Judy captured the precise moment a huge earthquake struck Los Angeles yesterday.

Filming of the show was underway when the quake - measuring 5.4 magnitude - struck California.

The tremor sent the judge and audience members running for cover.

A moderate earthquake struck east of Los Angeles on Tuesday and was felt hundreds of miles south to the Mexican border and east to Las Vegas, but there were no reports of injuries, major damage or power outages.
