More than 50 have died on the north west coast of Tasmania.

Despite the deaths Australian rescuers say they have managed to release 11 of the pilot whales at a nearby beach where they stand a better chance of survival.

They are one of the first twins delivered this year at the Bifengcia base of the China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in Yaan, in the Sichuan Province.

The cubs are said to be in good health just five months after an earthquake left an important panda habitat, the Wolong Nature Reserve, largely destroyed.

A German zookeeper who lovingly raised celebrity polar cub Knut at Berlin zoo has died of a heart attack aged 44.

Berlin police said Thomas Doerflein was found dead in his apartment in a western district of Berlin near the zoo. Doerflein shot to fame and gained scores of female fans when he hand-reared Knut after he was rejected by his mother.

Tofu factory waste is being turned into energy in Indonesia.

Indonesians in a central Java village are turning tofu factory waste into energy, reducing both air and water pollution and offering an alternative to fossil fuels. Soy-rich wastewater is left to ferment, and the biogas produced is used by two tofu factories and 20 households in the area.

That's the arguments development professionals want governments and businesses to hear to help improve the sanitation facilities of the 40 percent of the world's population who live without a toilet.

While most primates face the threat of extinction, in Brazil, Golden Lion Tamarins are bucking the trend.

To save this species from extinction, the Brazilian conservationists says there must be at least 2,000 tamarins living in protected areas by 2025. Golden lion tamarin monkeys are among the world's rarest mammals, with only about 1,400 living in the wild.

Conservationists at the Buenos Aires Zoo in Argentina work to return an endangered Crowned Solitary Eagle to her habitat.

Shampalwe is a young, female eagle who hopefully will mate in her new home.

China has two new unofficial Olympic mascots. They are giant panda twins born on the second day of the 2008 Beijing Games.

The twins were born to 9-year-old 'Qi Zhen', who gave birth after a pregnancy extending over 100 days. The birth took place at the Giant Panda Breeding Research Base, near Chengdu, in Sichuan province.

Honda Motor expects a strong response to a lower-cost, five-door hybrid vehicle it will launch globally in April, a senior executive said Wednesday.

"We're targeting sales of 100,000 units of this new vehicle in North America," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president in charge of sales and marketing for American Honda Motor Co.

An international report reveals almost half the world's monkeys and apes are facing a worsening threat of extinction because of deforestation and hunting.

Around 634 species were included in the report, of those 48 percent were classified as being threatened by extinction.

Indonesian police have found 14 tonnes of endangered pangolins or scaly anteaters stored in frozen containers after raiding a warehouse in Sumatra.

Police arrested 14 people after the largest ever seizure of the animals in Indonesia.

Tropical Storm Edouard hit the upper Texas coast bringing driving rains and winds near 65 mph.

Edouard did little damage to the major U.S. oil and gas producing region of the Gulf of Mexico. Weather forecasters predict the tropical storm will weaken as it moves inland.

An oppressive heat wave is making life difficult for millions of people in the American heartland, while a tropical storm stirs along the Gulf Coast. Residents along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Texas are bracing for the possible impact of Tropical Storm Edouard. Weather forecasters say the fifth tropical storm of the 2008 season has a twenty percent chance of becoming a hurricane by landfall. Jon Decker reports
